Genesis Technology
Chief Operating Officer, China
2017 – 2020
Running four data center campuses for GPU cloud, rendering, AI and blockchain computing at over 99% uptime.
Genesis Technology built and ran one of the largest GPU and ASIC computing operations in the world: government-backed data center campuses in Putian, Fuzhou, Wuxi, Yancheng and Beijing, guarded around the clock by a detail of more than 20 Chinese soldiers and hosting 560,000 GPUs and more than 150,000 Bitmain ASIC Bitcoin mining machines. Beyond mining, its GPU fleet powered cloud rendering for major film studios, integrated circuit design, bioinformatics and some of the earliest AI workloads. The team engineered its own hardware, sourcing GPU chips and memory directly from NVIDIA, AMD, Samsung and Micron, and built the first eight-GPU motherboards, followed by 16-GPU systems in 4U and 8U chassis. At its peak it was the largest Ethereum mining operation in the world.
As Chief Operating Officer for China, Chris ran four data center campuses at more than 99% uptime, leading the data center staff alongside the executive team. He set budgets and operating plans, advised on capacity and expansion, managed customer and industry partnerships, and ran the strategic technology relationships behind the fleet, including NVIDIA, AMD, Samsung, Micron, TSMC, Bitmain and PC Partner. As China's policy turned against crypto mining, Genesis Technology was shut down, and a dispute with its customer Genesis Mining over the hosted equipment went to China's Supreme People's Court, which in 2021 upheld the return of some 485,000 GPUs to Genesis Mining. The same year China banned crypto mining nationwide. China had hosted as much as three quarters of Bitcoin's mining in 2019; the industry moved abroad, chiefly to the United States, which became the world's largest mining country.
